Soul is in Control
This is why family members tend to push our buttons. Our soul knows the karmic energy we need to balance prior to incarnating, so it designs lessons for us to have the opportunity to learn from a karmic standpoint in a particular lifetime. To that end, it chooses people we would have to regularly interact with to present those learning opportunities to us. Family tends to fit that bill. Look at issues your family members trigger in you. What is the negative charge? Odds are there is somethng there your soul is inviting you to release and move past.
It might be anything. The point is these things are there to give us a helping hand. The sooner we get that, the sooner we can recognize how energies in the universe work for us to move us away from negativity and who we are not, and toward joy and well-being, and experiencing who we really are.
Each of our souls chose to incarnate on this planet at this time as us to balance out our karma, explore certain themes and experience certain things that are designed to push us out of our comfort zones and encourage us to be who we really are.
All we have to do is understand that our little self (i.e., ego) is not in control and get in touch with our Higher Self--that inner voice within, which is always navigating us wisely. Then we have to move our ego out of the way (i.e., surrender) and trust our Higher Self. The more we do, the easier it gets.

Ego is not in control
With respect to the exploration of themes and experiences, our soul has a general plan for its lifetime as us. And when we stray too far from its agenda--which most of us do, from time to time, because most of us don't have any idea what we are really doing here--our soul may cause something to happen or not happen to put us back on track. It might be an accident, so we're laid up, less distracted by the outside world, and can't do much other than be with ourselves and do inner work. It might be a layoff, so we are forced to move in a different career direction. Or maybe we don't get the job we desperately wanted.
If you think about it, how could this not be the case? Our soul is us! It is on our side! It wants to experience itself through us and share in joyful experiences with us, so why wouldn't it do everything it possibly could to encourage us to use our free will to make choices that move us in that direction? Those choices can sometimes be hard, but that is how we build our spiritual muscles and set the stage for a level of joy to enter our lives that the ego is incapable of delivering.
